Key takeaways:

  • The Expense Tracker App™ finds and stores HSA eligible purchases and makes it simpler to file reimbursement claims.

It’s no secret that HSA reimbursement can be confusing. A 2025 survey found that half of HSA users didn’t bother with claims due to process difficulties, leaving an average of $2,500 in eligible expenses unreimbursed.

Enter the Expense Tracker App™. It’s a free tool that does most of the reimbursement legwork for you, allowing you to take full advantage of your account.

Here’s how the app works, as well as some 101 on HSA reimbursement and which expenses are reimbursable.

How Does HSA Reimbursement Work?

Let’s start with a quick rundown of how to reimburse yourself from your HSA

When you purchase an HSA eligible product or service, you can:

  • Pay directly from your HSA account (via a card, your account, or check).
  • Pay out of pocket and reimburse yourself later.

If you opt for reimbursement, you can:

  • Withdraw cash from an ATM with your HSA card.
  • Transfer money from your HSA account to your bank account.
  • Write yourself a check from your HSA account.

You’ll need to keep your receipts to prove your purchases are eligible if you’re audited by the IRS.

Sometimes, you may not want to reimburse yourself right away. If you wait to take money out of your HSA, it can continue to grow and earn interest or investment income tax-free

How Long Can I Wait to Reimburse Myself?

There’s no “deadline” or time limit for reimbursing yourself from your HSA. But the purchase is only eligible for reimbursement if you made it after you opened your HSA. As noted above, you’ll also need to keep a receipt of the purchase.

Which Expenses Qualify for Reimbursement?

According to the IRS, you can only reimburse yourself from your HSA for “qualified medical expenses.”

These expenses must be for products or services that are used for the “diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease and for the purpose of affecting any part or function of the body.”

In practice, that means you can reimburse yourself for medical care you receive from a doctor, dentist, or another healthcare provider. You can also use your HSA for insurance costs, such as deductibles, as well as products used to treat or prevent a medical condition.

What Is the Expense Tracker App™?

Expense Tracker App™  is a free app that helps you find and store your HSA eligible expenses.

It makes it easier to discover eligible products you’ve purchased, store your purchases, and submit an expense report for reimbursement to your HSA administrator.

How Does the Expense Tracker App™ Work?

Here’s how the app works:

  • It connects to online retailers where you’ve shopped and finds eligible purchases you’ve made. You can also upload receipts to find out if purchases are eligible.
  • The app adds eligible purchases to the Expense Dashboard®, where you can store and track your purchases. It pulls the eligible item, its price, and the date of purchase from uploaded receipts but doesn’t store the receipts themselves.
  • When you’re ready, the app generates an expense report with a detailed summary of items you’ve bought that are HSA eligible.
  • You can use the expense report to file a reimbursement claim with your HSA administrator. The app guides you step by step through the process.

The app can also:

  • Send email notifications when you make an eligible purchase from a linked account.
  • Automatically store and track all HSA Store® purchases.
  • Scan barcodes or check product names for eligibility.
  • Set aside eligible purchases for future reimbursement.

In Summary

HSA reimbursement doesn't have to be complicated. The Expense Tracker App™ streamlines the process by tracking eligible purchases, verifying eligibility, and helping you file claims.

You can download the app for iPhone or Android.
